Stay on Top of the Digital Game

Most people say they can’t tell by looking at me (I’ll take that as a compliment), but I’ve been in the publishing business for 28 years now. I’ve done everything from marketing to copyright permissions to proofreading and editing and now I’m doing graphic design and even some social media.

As I was trying to come up with what to write about this week, I came across a really interesting article, 4 Ways to Stay on Top of Your Digital Marketing Game. In the world of graphic design and marketing today, you can’t avoid going digital. Whether sharing files on the cloud or posting articles only on the web (which makes me sad because of my print background), the world has gone nearly completely digital. Marketing (and publishing) isn’t what it once was. It’s not just about print and TV ads or what you put in the mail. Your presence has to be made online through mobile apps, websites, podcasts, and social media. So how do we keep up? Well, this article suggests a few great ideas.

  1. Join a LinkedIn Group. It’s a great (and easy) way to make connections in your industry.
  2. Attend a Digital Marketing Conference. There’s a conference for just about every topic and every skill out there.
  3. Track Your Success. If you are marketing online, check your stats, read the feedback you get, and keep up with messages and emails about your efforts.
  4. Brush Up on Your Skills. Take a class, hone your skills, and learn more.

You can never really learn too much or get tired of learning something new about the work you do. So, get out there—join a new group, go to a conference, learn a new skill. Stay on top of the digital game because it’s always going to be changing.
