Planning Your Summer Vacation

It’s nearly mid-June, and by now you’re probably counting down the days until your summer vacation. Whether you are having a “staycation” at home or getting away—to the beach, the park, or some exotic, faraway locale—somehow your job still has to get done.

A recent Glassdoor article noted that two in three employees report working while on vacation. Apparently, no matter where people go or what they do while on vacation, many folks actually bring their laptops along and do work!

Guilty as charged.

There are certain tasks for which I’m responsible, and, in many cases, I’m the only one who can handle them. Is that a good thing? Probably not. And sometimes, it can’t be helped. But for the most part, with proper planning, everyone, including me, can take a work-free vacation.

The Glassdoor article makes some really excellent points:

  1. Put in for vacation time as soon as possible. Make it clear to your team that you will be unreachable.
  2. Be proactive. Discuss a backup plan with your team. Be prepared with several ideas about who can do what while you are away.
  3. Make sure to set up a helpful “Out of Office” reply email so that people know whom to contact in your absence.
  4. Make sure that this backup person is primed for success. Meet with him or her to go over all your projects so that he or she knows exactly what to do during your absence.

Proper planning is the key to success.

And if you’re not sure about whom you can trust to help you out, you don’t have to look very far.
